From Podium To Publication: Five-Year Publication Outcomes of Oral Presentations at National Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Congresses (2015–2019)

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate the 5-year publication outcomes of oral presentations presented at the National Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Congresses between 2015 and 2019.
METHODS: Abstract books of the National Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Congresses held between 2015 and 2019 were reviewed. Only oral presentations were included. Subsequent full-text publications were identified through systematic searches of PubMed and Google Scholar using presentation titles and author names. Publications appearing within 5 years after the congress were recorded. Identified articles were classified according to journal indexing status, quartile ranking, and impact factor. Time to publication was calculated relative to the congress year.
RESULTS: A total of 1677 oral presentations were evaluated. Of these, 772 (46.0%) were published as full-text articles within 5 years, including publications in both nationally indexed and internationally indexed journals. Publication rates differed significantly across congress years (p=0.002). Among the published articles, 464 (60.1%) appeared in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)-indexed journals. Most publications occurred within the first 2 years after presentation. Quartile analysis demonstrated a predominance of Q2 and Q3 journals, whereas Q1 publications constituted a smaller proportion. The mean impact factor of SCIE publications varied by year, with the highest average observed in 2017.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Nearly half of the oral presentations presented at the National Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Congresses between 2015 and 2019 progressed to full-text publication within 5 years. The majority of these publications appeared in internationally indexed journals, while a smaller proportion were published in nationally indexed journals, indicating that oral presentations at the national congress contribute meaningfully to the orthopedic literature.
